April Artist Kathleen Klackle
Kathleen Klackle’s sister asked her to grow some gourds for her so she could make birdhouses. Klackle’s sister was disabled and loved to sit in her chair by our window and watch the birds. She passed away before she could make them. Klackle decided to finish her project.
“The gourd birdhouses I had saw at craft shows and markets did not have an easy way to clean them out. The debris are removed from a small entrance hole which often results in breaking the gourd. My birdhouses are hinged with a latching door so they can be cleaned easily.
I make utilitarian birdhouses. I started to make some in animal forms and selling them at farmer’s markets and craft fairs. The animal birdhouses were not really suited to outdoor use but people bought them anyway because, honestly, they were pretty cool. People began asking for them as a non-birdhouse and stashboxes were born.”
