April Artist Thomas Freier

I assemble found vintage items into creative sculptures. I have always loved the way items from the 1920s to the 1950s were produced. Kitchen appliances, hand tools, cameras, they all seem to have Art Deco, or early Modernism influences. I showcase these obsolete items in my art. I would rather see an old film camera incorporated into a sculpture rather than lay in a drawer never to be seen. I love how appliances were manufactured then. They were made to last forever. I assemble all of my sculptures with period correct fasteners, so the final product is still an antique. I never weld or use glue. There is quite a bit of precise machining that goes into each piece. There are a lot of drawings and fixtures to get all the parts to fit exactly like I want them to. Some of my sculptures even have moving parts. I also like to give every piece a small detail that will appeal to a particular person.
