Jody Brown December Guest Artis 2024

Jody Brown’s love of making pine needle Baskets and gourds was passed down to her from her mother, Phyllis Brown, who first learned the art 50 years ago. Jody has always worked with her hands in different mediums but enjoys the complexity and natural Materials that she is currently using.”

It’s always interesting to see the completed basket. I may have something in mind in the beginning, however, by the end it may be totally different. “The process of making a Pine needle basket starts with collecting Pine needles, mostly from the Longleaf pine in the southern states which grows in length from 12 to 18 inches.

The needles then must be prepped to be used naturally or dyed. The baskets are made by coiling a group of Pine needles, adding one pine needle at a time. Stones, beads, or other decorations can be added. Each basket takes many hours of work. When working with a Gourd, it is first dried, cleaned, and cut. The Gourd is then painted or left natural. It is then ready for the pine needles or other decoration. Jody is Originally from Bremen, Indiana and is currently residing in Plymouth, Indiana. She is a member and shows her work at Heartland Art Center in Plymouth.
