Merry Queen of Heaven

My artwork celebrates the natural beauty of our world as discovered through my personal encounters with it. Whether a short pause from a bike ride, a hike with my family, or just watching the clouds swell in the summer sky right before a thunderstorm, each oil painting and charcoal drawing are renditions of actual places and moments from my life.

Though my artwork explores the real sensations of light, color and texture in nature, I do not seek to capture it in a photorealistic manner. I depict each landscape in a more intuitive manner as opposed to laboring over photorealistic precision. As I approach the canvas, I reflect on the elements that first drew my attention to the scene and focus on the overall impression I felt from my experience.

My painting process tends to begin by blocking in general areas of color that help me establish the tonal values of sunlight and cast shadows within the scene. As the forms within the landscape begin to take shape, I search out the textural nuances that make the objects within my work more recognizable and clearer to the viewer. These details are often built up through exploratory mark making and color glazing.

Working with landscapes has unlocked for me an infinite source of inspiration and awareness. I am always amazed at the level of intricacies a landscape will reveal about itself as I work within my image. With each completed work, I grow more and more aware of the beauty that daily envelops me. As our society continues to grapple with the distractions of today’s virtual environment, I want my artwork to be a reminder that there is an amazing and beautiful world beyond the confines of a smartphone screen or monitor.  May the works from this collection help give you pause and a chance to reflect on your own sense of wonder in the world.
