Sibilance Records - Free Wi-Fi

Some people will look back on COVID-19 as a time they hunkered down. Jared Herron will look back on this time as the beginning of Sibilance Records.

In March 2020 Herron, like many, was furloughed form his job as a graphic designer. He found himself with time to pursue a long-time dream, starting a recording company. Herron says, “I was playing a bunch of shows with a bunch of bands. I thought I wish there were a way to get it (local music) out there to people.”

Sibilance is a word the Herron used to say a lot during sound checks. It became kind of a mantra for him as a readied for shows. He belongs to the Leather Phase with whom he has played guitar for a few years. The band made one of the first releases called Leather Phase. Herron plays multiple instruments.

When you purchase from Sibilance Records you get a cassette tape, a code to the online download at Bandcamp, and indy style goodies hand selected by Herron.

Herron’s latest release is from Sibilance Records is Free Wi-Fi. “I tell people I am not Berry Gordy. I wanted to put my friends and other people who are really talented out there,” says Herron.

Herron has put together a fun and rough album of sixteen local bands and musicians. Why rough? Each of the bands submitted their song to Sibilance from homes or small settings. Some of the recordings are more polished like KO’s, Maybe and Sanchez Agency, Bad Town for Stoner. Other recordings like Sleepy Jack, Stale have a garage band vibe.

Lune The Band plays twanged up rock n’ roll that is inspired by punk rock and hard knocks. They preach the gospel of 4/4, and that music connects us all.

Each of the bands offers a unique sound and contribution to the album. In this time of Netflix-binge and sourdough bread Free Wi-Fi is an audio adventure across what would be the Michiana local bar scene if it were happening.

Why Not Both

Why Not Both

I started writing simple songs as a hobby a few years ago. The guys came along and added their style to it all and that’s how we ended up with our pixie dream pop style. Pretty Ribbons is the first song I ever wrote— it’s a sappy little love song about walking away from fizzled out relationship. — Kelsie Harmon, Why Not Both

“Each release is unique. I don’t think you are going to be able to forget the music that we put out. Everything you are going to hear is interesting and slightly out of whack. If that sounds like a good time, we might be your kind of people. I just want to keep the good vibes going,” Says Herron

I think labeling music like labeling people is a bit out of date these days. I wrote the song about feeling trapped in my own home but having all these insecurities of being out in the world not really wanting to be seen, being sunk into the couch and covered in moss. - KO Newborn
